SIXTEEN YEARS AGO, in 1971, Corporate Man by Anthony Jay was published. In that book, Jay outlined what was essentially a sociometric vision. It was a vision of a particular kind of group, the hunting band, noted for its efficiency and collective success. The central premise of the book was stated in these words:. . . that the tendency to form "hunting band" groups of about ten people . . .
is part of our nature, that these groups have been the instrument of our survival. . . and that any modern . . . organization still depends on these groups for its survival. (p. 36)
