A review is made of historical and contemporary research on differences between male and female participation and leadership in problem-solving group discussion. A summary of two exploratory studies suggests the need for current study of female and male communication in groups. From these two areas follows a discussion of lines of research appropriate to scholars in speech communication and sociometry
